Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong, astronauts of Shenzhou 19, dressed in extravehicular spacesuits of the China Space Station, successfully completed their third extravehicular activity on the evening of the 21st. So far, China's space station extravehicular spacesuits have successfully guaranteed 19 extravehicular activities since the space station mission, and the number of service life exceeds the life design index of "3 years and 15 times". The first batch of in-flight extravehicular spacesuits are being used to extend their life and have stable performance.

Extravehicular spacesuit is the core equipment of astronauts in the process of extravehicular activities, which guarantees the life safety and efficient operation of astronauts in extravehicular activities.

It is understood that the extravehicular spacesuit of the China Space Station is the second generation of "Feitian" extravehicular spacesuit. According to the design standard, the service life is "three years of in orbit storage, during which the number of times of use outside the capsule is not less than 15". Compared with the first generation of "Feitian" extravehicular spacesuits, the second generation has the characteristics of longer service life, higher safety and reliability, better mobility and flexibility, and stronger test and maintenance to ensure that astronauts perform extravehicular activities more safely and efficiently.

On September 27, 2008, Zhai Zhigang, an astronaut of Shenzhou VII, dressed in the first generation "Feitian" capsule jacket, left the first footprints of Chinese people in the vast space, and successfully completed the first space extravehicular activity of Chinese people.

On July 4, 2021, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo, astronauts of Shenzhou XII, dressed in the second generation of "Feitian" extravehicular spacesuits, successfully completed all scheduled tasks during extravehicular activities. This is the first space extravehicular activity of Chinese astronauts in the space station stage.

"At present, the extravehicular spacesuit of the space station is in good performance and stable condition. It has successfully guaranteed 19 extravehicular activities of the space station mission, and the maximum use of a single garment has reached 17 times, exceeding the 'three years and 15 times' life index." Liu Dongyue of the China Astronaut Center said.

Up to now, the extravehicular spacesuit of the space station is the first flight product to carry out life assessment in orbit in China. Adhering to the principle of intensive and efficient, the purpose of life extension is to maximize the in-flight application efficiency of extravehicular spacesuits and save engineering costs.

It is reported that after reaching the life index, the scientific research team will regularly assess the life of the extravehicular spacesuit of the space station, build a scientific and reasonable method system for health monitoring and life assessment of extravehicular spacesuit based on the interaction between heaven and earth, and predict the life of the current clothing. At the same time, the system identifies the short board of life, which is convenient for the subsequent upgrading of clothing life, so as to achieve the goal of both risk control and life extension.

"We have explored to establish a scientific and reasonable life assessment method, in-depth mining of on orbit and ground test data, carried out a large number of material level and product level verification tests, and assessed the life boundary. At the same time, combined with the regular inspection of on orbit clothing and pre departure inspection, we confirmed the health status of clothing to ensure that astronauts perform the mission safely and reliably." Liu Dongyue said.
